After more than 20 years working in IT project management, I’ve spent a lot of time devising projects, identifying tasks, building systems, analysing data, and refining processes so they deliver results. For the last two years, I have applied those skills to something completely different: horse racing. I created my own algorithm and ran it in 2024 and 2025, refining it. It typically produced an average return of 0.5-1% per day!

In April 2026, I went live, using my own money to gamble on horses. The model is designed to identify horses with a very high probability of losing that meet a strict set of criteria. I then place lay bets on a betting exchange — effectively acting like a bookmaker and betting against the horse winning.

April 2026 the model returned 30%. So far in May (day 9), the model has returned an 11% profit.

The long-term objective is simple: grow the gambling bank balance until the model is generating an average profit of £300 per day (including losing days). That equates to £9,000 per month (tax free in the UK), comparable to earning around £750 per day (before tax) from an IT contract, but achieved with just 30 minutes of work every morning.

After three decades in corporate environments — endless stand-up meetings, status reports that no-one reads, and senior management’s expectations that rarely match reality — my goal is simple: step away from the 9-to-5 life with something else to replace the income. This model is the first step toward that. This feels like a Jerry McGuire moment of epiphany 🙂

There’s no mystery to the approach. No magic or trickery. Bookmakers make money by taking positions against thousands of horses every day. My model simply replicates that logic on a smaller scale: identify runners with a very low probability of winning and lay them.

Since 1 April, the model has selected 367 horses. 357 have lost and just 10 have won. That’s a 97.3% strike rate, which has proven very consistent over the two years of trials and testing.
